bronzed purple leaves, slightly hairy stems. Spike like

Agapanthus. African
blue lily.
Member of the Agapanthaceae/lilliaceae
family. Height 60-90cms; spread 45-60cms. A clump
forming , full to half hardy perennial. Their leaves are
like thin straps and their flowers are carried on a tall
stems. The flowers being umbels of trumpet shaped
usually blue but could be white (if you are lucky).
Protect from slugs/snails who could do some damage,
particularly to young, new leaves. Depends on your
climate and micro climate as to whether this would need
protection, I always err on side of cautiousness and
give a good mulch in the autumn or over winter in cold
frame if kept in pots. They may not come true to type
from garden seed…. hence i have not listed a cultivar as
they were originally given to me un named but they are
such a beautiful plant. They also take 2-3 years to
flower but again well worth the wait. |

at its best in a fertile, moist site with shade/partial
shade. Particularly tolerant of drought. Self seeds
prolifically but can also be divided to increase your
plants. Excellent ground filler. Looks spectacular after
rainfall when droplets settle on the delicate leaves.
