Member of the Asteraceae/Compositae family. Height 45 cms; spread 60 cms. A hardy perennial with green/grey woolly leaves and blue flowers in late spring to mid summer. Spreads by rhizomes. Preferring moist fertile soil in full sun or partial shade. Powdery Mildew can be a problem in dry situations keep moist at all times. Very attractive, unusual plant.

Acorus gramineus ''Ogon'   Japanese rush

Member of the Araceae family. Height 25cms; spread 10-15cms.  Essentially an aquatic plant deep; with glossy, variegated yellow/cream and green leaves. Grow at pool margins; in water to 10 cms or in wet to very wet soils in full sun. Divide rhizomes at beginning of the season every 3-4 years. Pot up and once established can be replanted. Trouble free with regards to pest and diseases. A semi evergreen which makes use of winter colour. I have grown this successfully as a wet border plant and pond plant. Great trouble free plant.

Ajuga reptans   Bugle.

Member of the Labitae/Lamiaceae family. Height 15 cms; spread 50-60 cms. Hardy, rhizomatous perennial, spreading by stolons . Attractive bronzed purple leaves, slightly hairy stems. Spike like whorls of dark blue, lipped flowers are produced in late spring to early summer. Ajuga needs a moist, well drained, fertile, humus rich soil in sun or partial shade. It will however, tolerate poor soils in full shade, making it a very versatile plant. Excellent ground cover.

  Agapanthus. African blue lily.

Member of the Agapanthaceae/lilliaceae family. Height 60-90cms; spread 45-60cms. A clump forming , full to half hardy perennial. Their leaves are like thin straps and their flowers are carried on a tall stems. The flowers being umbels of trumpet shaped usually blue but could be white (if you are lucky). Protect from slugs/snails who could do some damage, particularly to young, new leaves. Depends on your climate and micro climate as to whether this would need protection, I always err on side of cautiousness and give a good mulch in the autumn or over winter in cold frame if kept in pots. They may not come true to type from garden seed…. hence i have not listed a cultivar as they were originally given to me un named but they are such a beautiful plant. They also take 2-3 years to flower but again well worth the wait.

Alchimella mollis Lady's Mantle.

Member of the Roseceae family. Height 60 cms; spread 75 cms. Cymes of tiny, yellow flowers borne in late summer to early autumn are held above clumps of soft, slightly hairy, scalloped, lime green leaves. Good all rounder! Thrives in most situations but at its best in a fertile, moist site with shade/partial shade. Particularly tolerant of drought. Self seeds prolifically but can also be divided to increase your plants. Excellent ground filler. Looks spectacular after rainfall when droplets settle on the delicate leaves.

Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow)

Member of the Malvaceae family. Height 2m spread 1.5m . Hardy perennial. Pale lilac pink flowers from midsummer to autumn. Soft hairy leaves. Their wiry stems help to support this tall plant so support is less needed. Tolerates wide range of situations/soils but at its best in moist, fertile well drained soils in full sun. Used in mixed/herbaceous borders and wildlife gardens. Used for culinary/medicinal purposes.
